Did you know you can use social media to get to know your customers better? Try these tactics to build better connections and gain insights into who your audience is and what they care about so you can speak their language.

Check Out Your Current Customers

Where your best current and past customers are the most active? Are they active on Facebook and Instagram? Start there. Expand with project videos on YouTube later.

Ask Them

Take a survey or a poll. Or ask one question on your social media platform and ask them to comment below, use the Instagram stories voting feature, or LinkedIn polls. Here are a few questions you could ask—

      • What’s their favorite style of log home?
      • This or that? North Woods style or farmhouse modern?
      • What’s their biggest maintenance challenge?
      • What’s their favorite color stain?
      • How long have they owned their log home?
      • This or that? Lake cabin or in the mountains?

Are You Listening?

If you have a social media scheduler like HootSuite or Sprout Social, many of them have social listening tools built in. You monitor your audience, find relevant keywords, hashtags, or topics, and follow them. You’ll get insights into the challenges, questions, and preferences of your customers.

Be a Good Social Host

Think of social media as an extension of your customer service team. Ask questions, invite feedback, and respond to comments. Read more here about how to handle trolls on social media.

Scope Out the Competition

Study what your competitors are doing or ask other contractors you’ve met at ZF or who are in your industry who aren’t a direct competition but offer similar services. Ask them what they’re noticing. What’s working, and what’s not? What patterns pop up, and what seems to attract and get engagement? Analyzing your competition can help you find gaps in your marketing and help you differentiate yourself.

Go to Industry Events

Industry events, tradeshows, or conferences can help you meet other professionals, connect with potential customers and keep up with what’s new in your industry. I don’t know about you, but whenever I’ve gone to one of these things, I come back with many ideas for my business.

Remember, understanding your audience is an ongoing process. You’ll need to continuously monitor and engage with your audience and adapt your social media strategy to meet their evolving needs. By deeply understanding your target audience, you can create more relevant and engaging content that speaks their language and attract new customers.
