During Day 1 of How Design Live 2024, Andrea Sullivan, President of vYve by Vayner, had some practical and quick tips on shutting down those voices and, as she says, “Unleash Our Inner Bada$$.”

NWe’ve all felt it at some point. Imposter syndrome. That nagging feeling that we don't know what we're doing, everyone will find out, and we’ll be exposed as a fraud.

Did you know more people are scared of public speaking spiders? I was surprised, but it’s true.

According to the National Social Anxiety Center, public speaking is a common phobia 40% of us share. (Anyone else out there?) It’s even ahead of death or the fear of heights, although I wouldn't say I like heights either.

Being courageous requires fear.

So, how do we squash our fears and the negative voices inside our heads and get to the good stuff? We unleash our inner badass.

  1. Start by visualizing what you want in detail. Who do you want to be?
  2. Replace No with Yass!
  3. Build a badass tribe. Surround yourself with people who lift you up as a creative.
  4. Celebrate the wins and every step along the way. This emphasizes progress over perfection.
  5. Ask yourself, why am I here? Your answer may vary but may sound something like this: to learn, connect, find your next move, or see what unfolds…

Does Negative Nelly weigh you down, and you want more? Another great resource is Jon Acuff’s book, Soundtracks. It’s an easy read and gives tangible to-dos you can put into practice right away.
